For nine months, your body rapidly expands and shifts in an anticipation of the birth of your child. The ligaments in your pelvis relax to accommodate the birth of your baby’s head, your breasts swell with the product of milk and your belly grows to the growing fetus. Then the big moment arrives. The birth is miraculous, daunting, and exhausting but you are reassured that your body is ready for it.
But what about after the baby is born? Do you know how to take care of yourself? Lack of sleep, over abundance of hormones, physical recovery and a change in your relationship with your spouse are just a few of the hurdles you are going to face. You spent so much time reading up and preparing for the trials of a newborn in your life, that you may have forgotten to prepare YOURSELF for how to survive the first year.
I remember when I had my daughter (my third child), I did very little to prepare. I was a “new” mom for the third time, I knew what I was getting myself into. On my first outing out with the wee bundle of joy and her two brothers, I showed up at a friend’s house for a coffee date. As with all newborns, the minute mommy sits down is the moment that the lil’ darling makes a stinky right up the back of her beautiful outfit. I reached down for the diaper bag to change her only to realize I had left the house without a diaper bag!
Whether you are a first time mom or having a baby for the fourth time, each first year experience is going to be unique and challenging in its own way. You may get through labour unscathed, but are you ready for the new child in your life? Although there are plenty of books and resources available about how to properly care for your new baby, there is only one book I recommend for how to take care of MOM the first year; OH BABY! A Mom’s Self-Care Survival Guide for the First Year by Maria Lianos-Carbone.
Maria Lianos-Carbone is a well known blogger at AMotherWorld.com and mom of two children. She shares with you the proper care and feeding of Mothers during their baby’s first year in this honest and humors book. From the physical changes a woman’s body undergoes after birth to the emotional roller-coaster, Maria touches on it all with an interesting and heartwarming tale. Although its told from a personal perspective, it’s told in such away that moms from all walks of life can easily relate to and understand. It’s like Maria is sitting at your kitchen table over a cup of coffee, sharing her thoughts and feelings on Motherhood. Unlike other books on the market, this book focus on MOM and her relationship to the newborn, rather than the newborn itself. It is the perfect gift for a showers, sprinkles and “push” presents as it is sure to inspire and reassure mom!
I’m very excited to learn that I’m going to be an Aunty again!!! Knowing that I am done with the child birthing phase of my life (insert a SOB!), I enjoy watching my sister go through this beautiful process. I hope this book helps guide her through her second pregnancy and provide a friendly voice when I can’t be there. MR. G is getting a sibling!
To celebrate this new, I am giving away 1 copy of OH BABY! A Mom’s Self-Care Survival Guide for the First Year by Maria Lianos-Carbone to one lucky reader!
