When my husband was little, his house backed up to a forest. Along with his brother, he used to love spending summer afternoons exploring nature. One of his favourite finds were the bee hives that were nestled in the the tree throughout the forest. He loved hearing the buzz of the bees as the flew from flower to flower collecting nectar for honey. There were so many bee hives in the forest that the boys always had to be on high alert, to ensure they didn’t accidentally disturb or step on a nest.
Sadly, our children are not be able search the forest and find this same scenario. Did you know that 1 in 3 bites of food we eat is made possible to the cross pollination of bees? All over the world, including Canada, the bee population is rapidly declining. Changes in the environment, new pathogens and habitat loss due to pesticide exposure is resulting in at least 1/3 of a decline in hive loss per year. The government is working hard to implement pollinator protective policies but their efforts aren’t fast enough and the bees need help now!
