When I was a little girl, I loved playing Barbies. My sisters and I would dress our dolls up and create imaginary scenarios for them to play out. One of our favourite scenarios was fashion show. We would line up all of our dolls and try on different outfits on them. My favourite outfits were the ones that my Mom’s nanny had made her out of scraps of fabrics. They were unique and homemade and I loved they were unique and create with love.
Now that I have a daughter of my own, I’m not surprise to find that she loved playing Barbies too. Unfortunately, I am no where near as talented as the women in my family, so making my own Barbie clothes was out of the question. I did however learn a yarn toque craft at Girl Guides that I knew would make my daughter, and her Barbies very happy!
DIY Barbie Yarn Toque
- Toilet paper roll
- coloured yarn
1.. Begin by flattening the toilet paper roll so it is easy to cut it into strips. You will make 5 one inch rings. Set aside.
2.. Using the ruler, measure out approx. 45 pieces of yarn that measure 14 inches (the number of string needed varies on the type and thickness of the yarn).
2. Begin with your toilet paper ring and once piece of string. Fold piece of yarn in half and place it inside the strip. Feed the two loose ends of the string through the hoop and pull to form a knot. Repeat with the rest of the string.
4. When you are done, divide the string into two groups. Starting with the first group as a whole, pull them through the center of the ring. Repeat with the second group.
5. Gather all the string edges together and tie them off with an extra piece of string. Use the scissors to cut off excess ends to form a cute pompom.
6. Gather up your Barbies and be ready for a good ol’ fashion Canadian Winter fashion show!!
