When decking the halls, there is one decoration that I love putting up and that is MISTLETOE. Mistletoe is a green leathery plant with white berries that is a relative of the sandalwood family. It is a parasitic plant that attaches itself onto other trees to steal its host’s water and nutrients. Unlike other sandalwood plants, mistletoe seeds are dispersed by berry-eating birds. The seeds are coated in a seamen like substance that allow them to attach to other plants, above shade level, and stick to the tree branches when deposited by the birds. Consumption of the berries are thought to be poisonous causing stomach pains, where as Hippocrates believed it treated menstrual pains, leprosy, infertility, epilepsy, and even cancer. How does a plant that causes so much disruption to host and humans become a symbol of a love and kisses at Christmas? It dates back to the ancient Greeks and the Norse God Baldur and his mother, Goddess Frigg. She took an oath from all elements of the earth (fire, disease, wind, etc.) and deemed her son invincible. To put it to the test, those jealous of Baldur’s powers set to test this theory. Goddess Frigg underestimated the power of mistletoe and forgot to ask for its protection. Loki used this forgotten plant and fashioned an arrow to shoot at Baldur, killing him. Goddess Frigg was devastated by the loss of her son and made a new oath that the mistletoe shall never be used as a weapon again, and she would place a kiss on anyone who passed under it. We now hang mistletoe in our homes to remind us to never underestimated the power of the mistletoe again. So for the holiday season, kissable lips are a must! But with winters cold, dry harsh atmosphere, it can be difficult to achieve it this time of year. The lip skin is very thin and because it doesn’t contain oil/sweating glands or hairy coverage winter’s harsh elements wreak havoc on your lips. If you are dreaming about smooth, kissable lips that are ready for the special mistletoe kiss you need to be prepared.
Tips for Mistletoe Kissable lips
- Hydrate your body– One of the biggest causes of dry, chapped lips is dehydration. When you are dehydrated, your body sucks moisture from external areas to important areas. It is important, whether in the WINTER or summer, to ensure that you are hydrated with a lot of water daily (at least 8 glasses) and consume a fluid rich diets to hydrate and protect the skin from inside
- Be aware of your environment – In winter, you are hit with a double whammy when it comes to indoor and outdoor temperatures and your lips. Outdoors, your lips are one of the only areas of your body that aren’t protected from the harsh winds and cold temperatures. Indoors, you are surrounded by dry, artificial heat. In order to protect your lips and other areas of your body, it is beneficial to use a humidifier that produces 20-30% humidity into the air.
- Exfoliate your lips twice a week – Living life in Canada’s harsh winter weather, no matter how prepared you are, you are bound to get a build up of dry, flaky skin on your lips. Use a natural mixture of honey and brown sugar and apply to your lips with a face cloth or tooth brush and gently scrub. This removes the dead skin and allows the new skin to breath. After you exfoliate, be sure to moisturize your lips well.
- Use Lip balm! When buying a lip balm, there are many factors you should keep mind. You should consider the long lasting effect, extra moisturizing power, natural ingredients, and SPF sunblock.
