With Fall now upon us, my kids are spending more time indoors. With hopes of drawing them away from electronics and television, I’m constantly on the hunt for new ideas to keep them busy. Crafting is one of the things we tend to gravitate when we are bored. Now that the kids are older, we are able to try more complex and intricate crafts.
Normally, we focus on crafts related to the current holiday season, but this weekend I decided to test out a new jewelry making kit called Gemmies Sparkle Loom. A few years ago, loom kits were huge in our house. The elastics weaving kit allowed us to make beautiful, dependable bracelets for our friends and family.
Gemmies Sparkle Loom takes the normal loom kit and makes it extraordinary! You can now weave your own Crystal Fashions using the new shaped Crystals and Colored Gem Rings. The kit features a mixture of 300 elastics, gem rings and crystals, pincers, sample instructions, a travel loom and storage kit! From bracelets to rings to necklaces, you can bling out your wardrobe with a personalized piece of art.
Pros: What I loved about this kit is it is all inclusive. It comes with instructions and enough beads to create at least 3 pieces of jewelry. The instructions were clear and easy to use. There is two different ways you can use this product. You can either connect the rings with the crystals (easy)
or you can weave the loom and add crystals after the fact (hard)
This makes this product appropriate for a wide age group range allowing all of my kids to participate in the fun.
Cons: The weaving part on the loom is VERY difficult. Having weaved before, I had a basic understanding of the process, but I found the elastics to be very hard to work with and they would fly off often. The pincers were helpful in assisting the elastic over the loom, but I felt they were too big to be effective.
In conclusion, my kids and I did enjoy this craft, however it was a team effort! It took awhile to understand the best strategy for weaving these elastics, but with time and patience (and many many hands), we created a few beautiful pieces!
