When people think of travel, holidays or weekends away, they normally think of Summer or Winter Vacation. One of my favourite times to travel is the Fall. The crisp fall air and vibrant fall background is all the inspiration I need to get outdoors and experience the beauty that fall has to offer. Think of the incentives that autumn has to offer; the summer crowds have dissipated, the busyness of back to school has warn off and there is lull in the action before the holiday rush takes hold. It is the time when local experiences, both indoors and out, are ready to shine.
This fall, my daughter and I participated in a Mother and daughter weekend away with three other Mom and daughter pairs in Gatineau, QC. Located on the northern bank of the Ottawa River, immediately across from Ottawa, Gatineau is known for its cultural attractions, beautiful landscape and thrilling adventure! Here are a few of the many tourist attractions that Gatineau has to offer:
If you are looking for an outdoor adventures, your family’s destination should be Parc Omega. Parc Omega is a animal sanctuary devoted in preserving a paradise for Canada’s wildlife. Just 80 km outside of the Ottawa- Gatineau region, it is a great place for children and adults to get up close and personal with Canadian wild life. This park is a lot like African Lion Safari but more interactive and hands on. You can either drive your car, rent a tram or take the bus around this 15 km trail. You are encouraged to bring your own or buy at least 2lbs carrots from their gift store to feed the animals. I recommend at least 2lbs of carrots per person who wants to feed them!
In the Fall, the animals are more active. The combination of the cooler temperatures and the slower end of tourism season, makes this the ideal time to visit. Canadian animals, such as the Black bear, white wolf and other fur bearing animals are on the hunt for food prior to the winter season. It is also important to note that it is rutting season (mating season) for ruminant animals such as deer, sheep, etc. This means the males are actively seeking a mate and many antler battles are to be seen. It is a rare form of nature that you normally don’t see.
If the fall weather isn’t in your favour, you can always head indoors to Gatineau’s enormous indoor rock climbing facility, Altitude Gym! Altitude Gym brings the world of indoor rock climbing to another level and to a one-of-a-kind location. There unique new rock climbing facility offers bouldering, top-roping, lead climbing and much more!
My favourite part of the gym is there Clip n’ Climb area. Climbing wall meets theme park in this action packed room. With individually themed climbing walls, timed challenges and graded challenge levels, it is a place Mom and daughter can race to the top together! This gym is clean, unique and offers top safety precautions so that everyone can have an enjoy the experience.
Once you have fulfilled your need for adventure, you should indulge your cultural side. The best place to do so is at the Canadian Museum of History: The Children’s Museum. Experience a trip around the world without leaving Gatineau. From the moment, you pass through the gates of the Children’s Museum, you are bombarded by culture, activity and fun! Every child will find some new experience to expand their mind and open their eyes. They can pretend to cook in a cafe in Frances, climb through a pyramid in Egypt and put on a shadow play like in traditional India. With clothing, building and activities from each part of the world, your child can experience the joy of stamping their passport while enjoying their first taste of the arts, culture and history.
Whether your travel destination take you Ottawa or Quebec, I highly recommend you stay and play in the beautiful Outaouais region of Gatineau. To learn more of the many attractions Outaouais has to offer visit their website, or Follow them on social media at Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
