I have had two truly influential men in my life that have helped me become who I am as a person, husband and father. My Opa and my Father. Between the two of them they have taught me to treat people with the respect they deserve, help those in need, and be a leader not a follower. I can only hope that I can continue to inspire my own children the way that these two men have inspired me.
When I decided to participate in Movember this year a lot of people have asked me why? My answer always starts with those two men and always finishes with the other most important people in my life my wife and three kids.
I was 15 when my Opa passed away. He died of cancer and it hit our family hard. He was in his 80’s although you would never know it, and he had lived through the war and was always one of the strongest men I had ever known. It was tough to see him become so frail, it was hard for a teenage boy to see one of his hero’s reduced to half of what he once was. That’s what cancer does to people and for me, if growing a mustache for a month can raise enough money to find that cure so that my kids do not have to go through what I did, to me it will be well worth it.
This year Movember has added a new theme to its normal fundraising efforts. On top of the great causes of prostate cancer and mental health, this year Movember is raising awareness about getting active. My father was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes about 10 years ago. While he has been able to keep it in check with the advancement in drugs, one of the biggest differences in his life has been the amount of physical activity he partakes in now. From daily walks with my mom to chasing one of his 10 grandkids around, he has slowly taken back his life and is nowhere near as dependent on the drugs. That is the message I want to get out there, that all it takes is a little bit of exercise to keep us going.
I am not a writer, and if you ask my wife she will tell you I am not an overly emotional person, so for me it is difficult to put things into words. My wife and kids are my world. When they are not around I am not the same person. They are what allows me to get up every morning, they are the reason I go to work and deal with a job that can be extremely difficult, knowing I get to go home to them. They are also the biggest reason I have decided to join the Movember campaign this year. I watch my boys growing up and think about being there to watch them become the great men I know they will be. I think about my little girl and how I cannot wait to walk her down the aisle, and I think about my beautiful wife and how I cannot wait to spend the next 60 years by her side and watching our children grow and enjoying everything life has to offer us. I know that growing a mustache for one month a year probably won’t change the world, but it may change the prognoses of someone’s Opa, father, brother, friend and that may change their own little world just that little bit.
