The cost of living in Canada is continually on the rise. Families which use to survive on one working parent and 3.5 kids, are now reduced to two working parents and 1.5 kids. Although we don’t stick to a budget, we do understand the importance of saving money and reducing costs were applicable. With all of the political debate about the price of electricity possibly increasing by 75%, I began to search for ways to decrease our electrical use and save money.
On Jan. 1 2014, the Canadian Federal government made an announcement stating that 75-watt and 100-watt bulbs were no longer allowed to be made or imported into Canada. At the end of this year, 40- and 60-watt bulbs will join this ban as well. As a result, Canadian’s are banned from using incandescent light bulbs.
What does this mean?
Lighting accounts for approximately 10% of all electrical use in the average Canadian home. In order to be more environmentally friendly and raise Canada to Continental standards, Canadian’s will only be allowed to make, buy and import non incandescent light bulbs (i.e. LED, halogen, CFLs, etc). Don’t get sad at saying goodbye to your typical, rounded light bulb because if you replace the old incandescent bulbs (normal 75-watt and 100-watt bulbs) with new efficient bulbs (LED light bulbs), you can save money and electricity while reducing waste. LEDs are smaller more solid light bulbs. They operate different then the traditional light bulb and as a result are more rugged and durable. LED technology offers advantages such as exceptionally longer life spans (60, 000 hrs), lower energy usage (90% more efficient), reduce maintenance costs and are much safer then the traditional light bulb. Improving energy efficiency reduces the amount of energy used and thus reduces greenhouse gas emissions, which benefits all Canadians.

• SYLVANIA Ultra A-Line 12-watt LED
SYLVANIA Ultra A-Line is a high efficiency, low maintenance indoor/outdoor light bulb. One single bulb lasts for 25, 000 operational hours at 70% lumen maintenance. It produces a steady, warm white light the minute it is activated and it omits no lead, mercury or other hazardous materials. Good for the environment and your pocket book, its the perfect omnidirectional lamp light. What I love best about this light bulb is the colour and style. First of all, it looks exactly like a traditional light bulb. I hate change, so when I can find the latest technology and environmental power hidden under a comfortable front, I’m sold. One thing I dislike about many LED lights on the market is the colour that a standard LED admits. No longer is white light soft and warm, instead its shocking with a bluish tone. The SYLVANIA line isn’t like that! It is available in 2700K color temperature, the colour we all know and love. Knowing that this new light bulb is reducing energy consumption up to 82% and it lasts up to 33 times longer than incandescent light bulb, makes me proud to shine the SYLVANIA name!
• SYLVANIA MOSAIC™ Flexible LED Lighting Strips
I love my galley style kitchen. It allows the chef (aka DH) to be apart of the excitement happening in both the eating area and the living room. The only problem is because the kitchen is 2/3 cupboards and appliances, there isn’t anywhere to add a window, except the sliding door at the end of the kitchen. This results in majority of the counter tops being dark. If you are cooking, trying to examine food or read a recipe, it can be very cumbersome at night. Thanks to SYLVANIA CANADA, we installed the Flexible LED lighting Strips under the counters. It took all of 10 minutes to complete the installation. Quick and easy, even the worst handyman could install these lights. Being flat, we were able to install them without having to add an added lip to hide the lighting portion. I love that they meet the new government standards, help to brighten our life (LITERALLY!) and save us a few pennies in electrical costs. I think the kids love these lights more then I do! Not only can they change colours (15 colours to choose from!), but they can dance, twinkle and change colours all on their own. Think Christmas all year long!
