Growing up, my Mother was very inspirational role model in my life. She taught us the importance of respecting others, offering a helping hand when possible and never turn your back on someone in trouble. Whether it was helping a lost child find their mother in the grocery store, offering a stranger an umbrella when it was raining, or donating to a family in need, my mother was always the first to step up and offer a helping hand.
When I became a mother I knew I wanted to be just like mine. From a young age, I encouraged my children to look around them and offer a helping hand whenever someone needed it. We began with simple tasks, like being polite and holding the door for the person behind you or following the rule ‘ladies first’. As they grow older, we are now focusing on things like donating gently used toys or giving up birthday presents in exchange for donations to a wild life preserve.
In my blogging experience, I have had the opportunity to meet some great and amazing brands. Some donate an item to the poor for every item purchased, others hold fundraisers to raise money for their favourite charities, but the one that touched my heart the most was TELUS. Their #GiveWhereWeLive campaign is phenomenal and last weekend, my kids and I had the privilege of participating in the TELUS Day of Giving at The Byng Spring Fling.
What is TELUS Day of Giving (#GiveWhereWeLive)?
As you probably know by now, TELUS is committed to building healthy, strong and sustainable communities by embracing a simple philosophy – “We Give Where We Live”. TELUS believes that in order to do well in business, we must do ‘good’ in the communities where work and play and TELUS Day of Giving is just one way TELUS team members and their families give back to the community.
On Saturday, May 31, 2014, over 15, 000 TELUS Team members, their family and friends, and 1Heart1Family participated in the 9th annual TELUS Day of Giving. It was amazing! I mean what company do you see volunteering their time, sharing a smile or two, and helping everyone have a blast at a spring festival? TELUS does! When we first arrived, the kids and I were welcomed with open arms into the TELUS family!
The festival was a huge success! The entire community came out to Byng Fling to celebrate Spring, the beautiful weather and coming together as a community! There was something there for everyone! Bubbles, obstacle courses and chalk drawings, local artisans selling wears for the adults, and delicious food (served by the CEO of TELUS) for the entire family to enjoy. My children’s favourite part was the outdoor dancing scene. Lead by dancers, Djs and fitness buffs, they got to move, grove and shake their stuff. There wasn’t a sad face at the event! It was great way to meet your neighbors, to celebrate Spring and get to know TELUS on a personal level!
On the heels of its national Day of Giving, TELUS is inviting Canadians to share how they give back in their communities. Until July, Canadians who share their community giving photos and stories at givewherewelive.ca and on Twitter and Instagram using the hashtag #givewherewelive will have the opportunity to receive up to $50,000 toward the cause of their choice.Find more information about this awesome initiative on www.givewherewelive.ca
