Cooking has never been my strong suit. Although I am responsible for 80% of the meals my children eat, I am not confident in the kitchen. Basic dishes turn out OK, but I’m never brave enough to try something exotic or exciting. Last week, I had the opportunity to spend time discussing cooking techniques with two professional chefs; Chef Michael Smith and Chef John Higgins. Through our discussions, I learned that cooking is a passion. You can have a recipe in front of you, but it requires imagination, technique and the proper equipment to make an OK meal into an amazing one.
One of my go to places to buy quality cooking equipment is Home Outfitters. From beautiful place settings and dishware to brand names and the most popular cooking equipment available, you are sure to find everything you need to turn your cooking hobby into a masterpiece.
Introducing the Cuisinart Combo Steam + Convection Oven
One of the new cooking tools that I have welcomed into my home is the Cuisinart Combo Steam + Convection Oven. This convection oven is much more then your standard toaster, it is the ultimate counter top convection oven with full steaming capability. With 9 single and combination functions, you can steam, poach, broil, bake, and even proof bread. The convection function allows it to evenly cook your food while omitting the hot and cold spots found in your typical conventional oven. The circulation of the hot air via a fan in combination with the steam heat cuts cooking times up to 40% and the food retains valuable nutrients, vitamins, moisture and freshness
The overall look of the Cuisinart Combo Steam + Convection Oven is beautiful. Lightweight and compact, it takes up little space on my counter. The stainless steel exterior provides a clean, modern look and the simple button layout makes this machine inviting and user friendly. There is a large LCD screen on the front of the unit that displays cooking options, timer, temperature and indicator warnings (i.e. low water, which element is on, etc). The program dial rotates left and right to cycle through cooking functions, to set timer and select toast shade The oven light can be switched on to light up the interior to check on the colour and state of your food. The Start/Cancel button begins or ends a function.
Being so versatile, it’s not surprising that the Cuisinart Combo Steam + Convection Oven comes with many parts and features. There is a 1.4 liter removable water reserve on the side of the machine for creating the perfect amount of steam to cook your meal. A drip tray is located on the bottom of the machine to collect any excess liquid from the steaming process. The Oven rack is a four position rack allowing you to easily change the position for different cooking functions. The baking pan is perfect for hold meat or veggies the way a cookie sheet would in a conventional oven. The crumb trays slides under the heating elements to catch crumbs for bread and toast, but should be removed when using the steaming function.
When I first received the Cuisinart Combo Steam + Convection Oven, I was excited and overwhelmed! I have used many toaster ovens in the past and found it to be a waste of space. Why do I need such a huge toaster? When I began reading through the manual, I was surprised at all of the functions this oven was able to do. The first thing we attempted in the oven was toast. If it couldn’t create the perfect piece of toast, why bother using it with a more complex meal? Although it took longer then a regular toaster, the toast came out the exact colour we set it for. It was nice not to have to worry about hot surfaces or digging bread out of slots (a common problem with Gluten free bread because its smaller then normal bread slices!).
The next item we cooked in this oven was a roast. It was a beautiful warm day and we hated the thought of placing a roast in the oven and having the access heat from the oven warm the house. We placed the roast in the oven on the baking pan and set the timer. When we returned 45 minutes later (shorter time then our conventional oven!), the roast was beautifully cooked on the outside and very juicy on the inside. The device did get warm to the touch but the room temperature didn’t increase at all. It is the perfect device to satisfy roast cravings on warm summer days!
We have used the oven almost daily since we got it. Whether its toast in the morning, reheating leftover pizza or french fries for lunch or cooking chicken breasts for dinner, the Cuisinart Combo Steam + Convection Oven is a welcomed addition to our kitchen. My goals is to work up the courage to attempt making my own gluten free bread or donuts. Whether your looking to cook vegetables, chicken, toast, roasts or homemade donuts, this machine is for you!
