Your feet are amazing creations. Containing almost 25% of the overall bones in your body and flawless movement of over 100 muscles, tendons and ligaments, your feet play an important role in your lives. Not only do they bare your entire body weight and keep you upright, they absorb shock, propel us through motion and allow us to run, dance and play. Unfortunately, many people ignore the health of their feet until they are inflicted with pain or discomfort. Repetitive pounding, improper shoes and other illnesses such as diabetes, bunions and callus can result in bio-mechanical changes that can set off a nasty change of reaction, causing pain and discomfort in the joints above (i.e. knees, hips, lower back etc.).
As the winter snow begins to melt for good (fingers crossed!), I am on the hunt for a running shoe that I can wear on a daily basis. Having worked in the medical field for several years, I know the importance of choosing a good shoe to ensure that your feet are comfortable, the shock of each step is absorbed and your gait remains in a proper bio-mechanical alignment.
3 things to know before buying a running shoe!
1. Know your foot bio-mechanics– No two feet are the same. Experience, familiar history and normal growth and development can affect a persons biomechanics. Knowing your pronation (whether your ankle rolls inward or outward), arch type (flat or high) and other foot anomalies (bunions, callus, and deformaties) can help you select a proper shoe.
2. Know your shoe size – Each brand has a slightly different shoe size. I’m sure we have all bought shoes on a whim based on our normal shoe size, only to find out a 7 in one brand is not a 7 in another. When choosing a shoe you want to make sure that you fits snuggly, but isn’t too small. To ensure it is the right size, there should be adequate room at the toebox, your heel fits in heel cup without sliding out during normal gait, and it should be comfortable around the widest part of your foot and the top of your foot without allowing a lot of movement.
3.Know what activity you will be doing – There are many different shoes out on the market and choosing one can be difficult. First determine which activity you will be using the shoes for (i.e. running, walking, hiking etc) then find a shoe works best in that scenario. For example, cushioned shoes are great for uneven surfaces whereas stability shoes are great for racers.

I have always been a huge Skecher fan. Since I bought my first pair of Skechers as a teenager, I have always loved the style, the colours and the comfort they offer. When I was presented with a chance to review the new Flex Appeal with Memory foam , I was excited. I have never worn shoes with Memory foam, but sleep on a memory foam pillow every night so I knew what to expect!
LOOKS – My first impression of the shoes were they were beautiful! The contrast between the hot pink and the jersey t-shirt grey colour was stunning. I love the additional shoe lace that allowed you to jazz is up or keep it calm. The quality, as per usual, was impeccable. Not a stitch out of line, not a flaw to be seen.
FEEL– I am normally a size 7, so that is what I ordered. It was perfect fit! My heel was snug and secure, my arches were supported and my toes had wiggle room. The memory foam felt like a pillow underneath my foot and cushioned my foot from impact and shock. I was worried that the memory foam would flatten out over time, but after wearing the shoes for 12 hours straight, I’m happy to say that they were just supported at the end of the day, as the moment I put them on.
Overall, the Skechers Flex Appeal with Memory Foam are my new favourite running shoes. Their flexible base allows me to run after my children, the memory foam allows for all day comfort and the style is an envy to all of my friends. After wearing those dread boots this winter, my feet are excited to rest in these breathable, lightweight shoe. This Cinderella has found her glass slipper!
