When I owned my first home, I was so excited to express myself through decoration! It was a chance for me to express my artistic side. After living in two of my own homes, I have learned that decorating is not really my forte. I tend to collect items that are comfortable, interesting and appealing and hope that they will mesh together. I like clean lines and the contrast between dark woods, light walls and accent colours, but putting it all together is something I need a lot of help with!
Recently, I sat down with a friend, who loves (and is good at!) decorating and ask her to give me advice on how to decorate your home.
3 Tips to decorating any room in your house:
1. The Feel of the Room – Think about the room, what it will be used for and how you will FEEL when in the room. The kitchen, for example in my house, is a gathering place. It is the central hub of our house, where the kids do their homework, friends sit and chat and gourmet meals (ya right!) are created. The feeling for my Kitchen would be bright, happy and cheery, therefore I would choose bright, bold colours. My bedroom, on the other hand, is my sanctuary. Its where I go to be an adult, relax, and escape the pressures of every day. I would say for my bedroom the feeling would be serenity, therefore I would choose calm, cool colours. Once you have your feeling chosen it will help define the room and guide you where you want to go next.
2. Colour – Choosing the colour you want to display in your room should reflect the feeling of the room. You colour choice depends on your personality. Some people are happy to throw bright or bold colours on the wall, where as other people (like ME!) stick more to the neutral colours). If you are like me and opt for the neutral colours, try to liven your room by adding pops of colour through accents pieces and artwork.
3. Accent Pieces – To me, accent pieces are the best part of decorating! From artwork to lightening, throw pillows to accessories and really spice up a room. The fun part about accessories is that if you need to freshen your room or change the feel, it is an expensive way to do so. Recently, I came across a company that offers fun and inspirational pieces that are sure to add some flare to even the most decorating-challenged room!
