A quinzhee or quinzee/ˈkwɪnziː/ is a shelter made by hollowing out a pile of settled snow. This is in contrast to an igloo, which is made from blocks of hard snow. (Wikipedia)

Oh this looks like fun! How long did it take?
I’ve never heard of this term before. We’ve definitely built a quinzhee before…just never called it that. Cool! Love the pics of you and your family. Looks like you all had fun on Family Day 🙂
2 hours with 15 people helping. We got all 15 ppl inside when it was done!
I had never before heard of a quinzhee. Looks like it was a “pile” of fun!
wow 15 inside? that’s huge!
wow 15 inside? that’s huge!
I never had a name for it but for sure my kids and I play in the snow a lot. We have made many things from snow over the years.
I just learned something new. 🙂 Looks like you guys had a ton of fun!
My friends and I made those when we were kids. I had no idea what they were called.
That is so cool! Looks like fun!
Thanks for sharing!
Stop by and link up your wordless wednesday post here: http://mk2sahm.blogspot.ca/2014/02/wordless-wednesday-my-new-baby-stroller.html
I never heard of that word before. We used to make forts like this when we were kids.. the snow was much more it seemed like back then.
Never heard that term before! I should get my kids on making one before the rain comes LOL Can’t believe yours was large enough to house 15 people wow!
That is what my kids would call a fort – I didn’t realize there was another name for it. It’s very cool 🙂
I have never heard of this before, but it looks like tons of fun!!!
That looks like fun! It makes me wish that it snowed here in Sac.
That is awesome! I’ve never thought to do that, but then again we’ve never had that much snow where we could do something that amazing. It usually melts in 2 days. 🙂
Hmmm never heard of a Quinzhee before, but Kind of like an igloo… only you hollow instead of build.
I’ve never been around enough snow to do something like this. As a kid I always wanted to, but now as an adult I think that much snow would drive me mad! These are great pictures and it looks like you all had so much fun!
Being from Cali, I had the pleasure of seeing what it’s like to be in snow. I love how happy the kids look. They look like they’re having fun!
We actually had enough snow to make a quinzhee last week for the first time in years. It was actually the good snow that you can actually play in!
I feel so fancy knowing my snow forts were actually quinzhees! What fun… this is first winter with kids AND snow. All these factoids are adding to the magic. What a great wordless Wednesday.
That is such a cool concept. We live in Georgia – could never try it!
So much snow:) Fun for the kids.
I have never heard of the word until now… another new word learned today. I live in the tropics so kids here use other materials to make a “quinzhee.” Thanks for sharing your lovely pics. The kids sure look like they had a lot of fun!
I have never heard of a Quinzhee before. Looks like you all have a great time.
This is AMAZING!! The kids (and the adults) must have had a BLAST!?! For the first time (ever)… I am missing the snow… 🙂
I wish we had that much snow! It looks so cool and seems like fun. I’ve always wanted to build something like a snowman or an igloo. 🙂
This looks great. We used to build snow forts growing up in Michigan
