One activity my family loves to do together is cuddle up on the couch and enjoy a good movie. Whether it be a rainy day, a snow storm or just a lazy Sunday afternoon, a movie seems to bring the family together. Sometimes we struggle picking a movie that is suitable for both adult and children (especially when the children range from 2 to 7), but one collection of movies that we always agree on is Disney movies.
Normally, Santa brings us at least one DVD in our stockings to enjoy over the Christmas break from school. This year, I am on the hunt for new Disney movies to add to our collection. Here are two gems I highly recommend for this holiday season!
Disney’s Plane flew into stores everywhere on November 19!
The world of Cars takes flight in Planes, Disney’s high-flying animated comedy revved up with action and adventure. Join Dusty, a crop duster with sky-high dreams and a once-in-a-lifetime chance to take on the world’s fastest flyers in the greatest air race ever. Dusty has a huge heart but two big problems…he’s not exactly built for speed, plus he’s afraid of heights. His courage is put to the ultimate test as this unlikely hero aims higher than he ever imagined. With a little help from his friends, Dusty finds the courage to be more than he was built for—and the inspiration to soar.
Having two boys, I am very familiar with the Disney’s Cars series. I think we have watched one or both of them at least once a week since they were added to our collection. When they saw the ads for the release of Planes, I was pretty sure that this was going to be a regular in our rotation as well. Planes takes you on a high flying adventure with Dusty, a crop dusting plane, with big plans to be fly with the fastest and the best. Dusty is a humble, caring plane that is the perfect role model for young boys. He teaches them that dreams, even farfetched ones, are worth the effort. I love how Dusty shows kids to keep trying no matter what anyone else says and with hard work and determination, you can make your dreams come true. With action, heartbreak, humor and determination, this is a movie that is sure to entertain the entire family!!
We give this movie 4 out of 5 hearts!
Ariel’s Adventure Continues: 2 Movie collection
Available on Blu-ray Combo Pack November 19th
When I found out my third child was a girl, I was extremely excited to share my favourite Disney movie with her, Little Mermaid. When I found out they were releasing Ariel’s Adventure continues this holiday season, I knew this would be the perfect stocking stuffer for DD2. This DVD contains two movies that takes you on adventures before and after Ariel met Prince Eric.
1. The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Beginning
One of Disney’s most beloved characters reveals the extraordinary events that led up to her transformation into a princess! Long before Ariel walked on land and into Prince Eric’s heart, she was one of seven beloved daughters of powerful King Triton. But times were troubled in the underwater kingdom – and music was banned! In this magical adventure, Ariel, her fun-loving sisters, and her loyal friends Sebastian and Flounder strive to bring music and friendship back to Atlantica. Featuring breathtaking animation – and some thrilling surprises – The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Beginning is an enchanting tale you’ll share with your family again and again!
I love prequels. It provides valuable incite and information to why a character has developed the way she has. This movie answered questions left unsaid in the original (i.e. what happened to Ariel’s mother) and also provided a background to Atlantica that makes the first film all the more comprehensible. In the first movie, we are briefly introduced to Ariel’s sisters, but in this movie we get to know them on an in depth way and learn why it was so important for Ariel to participate in the concert she haphazardly missed in the original movie.
We give this movie a 3 out 5 hearts.
2. The Little Mermaid 2: Return to the Sea
All of your favorite characters from The Little Mermaid continue their adventures in this enchanting sequel to one of the most celebrated animated films of all time. Even though her parents tell her merpeople and Atlantica are just “old fish tales,” Ariel’s daughter, Melody, dreams of being part of that magical world. In an unforgettable story that will take your breath away, all the good creatures on the land and under the sea must join forces to show Melody that both her worlds can live in perfect harmony.
This was by far our favourite of the two movies. My children, specially DS5, loved seeing the product of Ariel and Prince Eric’s love, their daughter Melody. I loved how this movie was a backwards story of the original movie. Instead of Ariel wanting to be human ironically, her daughter wants to be a Mermaid. It goes to show you that kids always want what they can’t have. It was a very cute sequel and one any Little Mermaid fan would treasure.
We give it a 3 out of 5 hearts
