“She’s making a list, checking it twice”
I’m not sure what kind of holiday shopper you are, but I am the organized, eager beaver type. I love holiday shopping. I love searching for the perfect gift that will put a smile on someones face. Presenting someone with such a personal gift that it brings tears to their eyes. Or giving my children the gift they have drooled over for months.
Christmas shopping in my house begins in late August, early September. I begin by writing out a list of all of the people I have to buy for. For close friends and family members who do the gift exchange idea rather than buying every person a gift, I begin sending emails out to arrange to draws to pick names. Once I have the list of people I need to buy for, I sit down, review the list, and think hard of something I think they would like or something that defines our relationship. Over the next few weeks, I jot down gift ideas beside each name. Maybe it was something they said they wanted in a conversation we had or an item I saw on a commercial that made me think of them out of the blue. Whatever it is, I jot them down as potential gift ideas.
At the beginning of November is when the real fun begins! The Shopping! People may say that they hate the hustle and bustle of the holiday, the stores crammed with people and the items flying off the shelves, but I love it. Instead of thinking of it as nuisance, I think of it as an adventure! In fact, there has even been some Christmas Eve’s that the kids and I (when Daddy has had to work!) have headed to the mall, not to buy anything, but absorb the excitement of Christmas!
As I buy each present, I record it in a third column on my list. When the third column is full, my Christmas shopping is done! This list has been my strategy for years. It allows me to keep track of who I’m buying for, what I got them, and who I have left to buy for at a simple glance. If an extra person is added to my list, say a work Christmas Secret Santa program, I simply add the persons name at the end of my list and they won’t be forgotten.
This year the “Must have” item on DD2’s list is Mattel‘s Little People Disney Prince Klip Klop stable. She has always had a fun playing with her brother’s hand me down Little People sets, but recently she has become obsessed with Disney Princesses. ‘Rella, aka Cinderella, is her favourite. The first time she saw the Klip Klop stable at the toy store, she tried to drag the box off the shelf and place it in the cart. She was very unhappy when she was told no. With a three tired tower, Princess Aurora and Princess Rapunzel on their galloping horse, and magical sounds and songs, DD2 is lost in a world of imagination for hours. Even her brothers, DS5 and DS7, love playing with her and the self galloping horses!
