When you hold your newborn baby for the first time, their skin is pink and glowing. Barely kissed by air, it is soft, supple and healthy. Once they enter the world, their skin is exposed to harsh toxins, pollution, and stress. Unlike that of an adult’s skin, newborn skin is developing at a rapid pace, thus making them more susceptible to these irritants.
As a newborn matures in to a toddler their skin begins to change. Although it is more resilient, it is still far from the complete structure and function (ability to hold water or keep harmful chemicals out) of that of an adult’s skin. Whether it be the constant wiping of a sticky face, the changing of a dirty diaper or discovering mud, their skin requires a lot more attention to prevent skin irritation, dryness, chafing, and rashes.
Coming from a family of eczema suffers, the state of my children’s skin as always been of the utmost importance to me. From day one, I would routinely search for signs of irritation or dryness and rectify the problem before it became serious. Out of all of my children, DD2 was the worst for skin problems. She would react easily to dyes and perfumes found in baby body washes and laundry detergents, and kept me on the hunt for the right detergents to clean her delicate skin. Within minutes of using a product with chemicals, I would see an immediate reaction. She would get red and blotchy and tiny bumps would form all over her body. Sometimes, if I rinsed the soap off fast enough, the reaction would be mild, but more often then not, she would break out in a rash for days. I was sad that the baby washes that I had come to love when my two boys were babies, were not able to be used on my daughter. Still to this day, although she is rambunctious toddler, I have to be careful with the products I use.
Organic Bath and Body line
Fisher-Price has just released an amazing new age-specific collection of Bath & Body products. Knowing that babies grow and change, Fisher-Price has developed a line that address the unique needs of a newborn, infant, and toddler skin specific to their ages. Made with gentle, natural and organic ingredients, they contain all the good things that babies need without the harsh chemicals that could irritate them. These products are free of dyes, parabens, phthalates and alcohols and are dermatologist and pediatrician tested. Add in non-irritating and tear-free and you have a winning product that puts a smile on Mom’s face knowing she is providing the best care for her baby.
Since DD2 has had many reactions from baby washes in the past, I was very cautious when testing these new products out on her. I used her older brother, DS5 as a guinea pig, knowing that his skin, although sensitive, is stronger then hers. When he posed no reaction to the bath products, I attempted them on DD2.
I tested four products from the Toddler(18 + Month) line on DD2:
1. 3-in-1 Shampoo, Conditioner + Body Wash (345 mL) – Being a busy Mom of 3, I loved that this product combined 3 steps in one. It provides all the key ingredients needed to make bath time a joy rather than a chore. With natural products, most times the first thing to go is scent. Although, I don’t like the extras that come with adding scent to a product, I do love the clean smell that is left on my kid’s skin after a bath. I’m happy to report that Fisher-Price didn’t skimp on this! My children smelt fresh and clean and as a result ended up with extra snuggles from MOM!
2. Detangling Spray (207 mL) – After two boys, who’s head we always kept short, throwing a daughter into the mix has been a grand adventure for me. With my hair, I would tug through the knots knowing that it will be over soon. With a DD2, I don’t have the heart or patience to do so. The detangling spray provides and ultra-gentle mist that is suitable for tangles in both wet and dry hair. It made for a smoother hair brushing time.
3. Bubble Bath (345 mL) – What child doesn’t crave a good bubble bath? (or Mommy for that matter!) Many times when I fill my kids’ tub with bubbles, I find their skin becomes dry and flaky days later. With Fisher-Price’s bubble bath, the rich moisturizing foam allows the kids to have bath tub fun with soft, silky skin days later.
4. Foaming Hand Soap (236 mL) – With potty training in progress, good hygiene skills are essential. My DD2 loves washing her hands with her kitty shaped foaming hand soap and mommy loves that it eliminates the dirt, oil and bacteria without irritating her skin.
The cute bottles and fresh scent have found a place in our hearts. I am ecstatic that my DD2 can now have a fresh scent from a brand that I know and trust. Instead of worrying about outbreaks or reactions, I am treated to relaxing bath times, longer cuddle periods and happier kids.
PTPA Seal of Approval – Many products in the new Fisher Price bath and body line have received the esteemed PTPA (Parent Tested Parent Approved) Seal of Approval, the most publicized and highly recognized award seal in North America.
