Many people don’t realize the impact that what children watch on TV or hear on the radio has on their every day life. In today’s society it is the information and images we receive via the media that dictates how we view the world. Our children are like modeling clay, being molded, squished and conformed into societies ideal shapes. As a parent, it is imperative that we monitor these powerful storytellers (i.e television, movies, music, video games, and the Internet content) and ensure that our children are receiving the values, believes and understanding that is age appropriate and inline with our values.
One the areas that I find most difficult to navigate is the music industry. Too often popular lyrics repeated on commercials, advertizements and the radio are on subjects that are inappropriate for children to hear, never mind memorize and repeat those lyrics out loud. How many times have you heard a four year old sing, “I’m sexy and I know it”? It’s obvious that they don’t know what they are singing, but because of the popular nature of the song, they feel “cool” repeating it!
Having children spread out between the ages of 7 and 2, I sometimes find it difficult to find age appropriate songs that everyone will enjoy. Sometimes the songs are a big hit with one child, but deemed as babyish by another. Sometimes, the songs are amazing for one, but boring for another. Finding the perfect mix of rhyming words and catchy lyrics that will please the baby, while having a pop style base to appease the older children can be difficult.
When I was first introduced to Will Stroet, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Will Stroet is a Canadian award-winning bilingual children’s music artist and educator. He is just about to released another fantastic album called Just Imagine featuring high-energy tunes and heartwarming lyrics that are sure to please the entire family. Just Imagine is the perfect soundtrack for children young and old. It can provide the perfect background music for an afternoon or play or encourage a bunch of rambunctious toddlers to dance their sillies away. The catchy lyrics and modern music is something even mommy finds herself singing along too after the kids are in bed!
Of course my favourite song is Mama Samba. There is never a time when that song comes on, that the kids and I are bouncing around the house with huge smiles on our faces. That’s the thing about Will’s music that really struck a chord with me. His music is fun and entertaining without being inappropriate or babyish. The songs encourage the kids to use their imagination and enter a land of make believe. They teach them good values like bike safety and eating your vegetables in a fun and exciting way. This is definitely the type of music, with good values, that I want my children exposed to.
This is my kids favourite song!
