The kitchen is the heart of the home. It is located in the center of the home. It has the most traffic. It provides nourishment for those who are hungry. It provides comfort for those who are lonely. It is the place to sharpen ones brain (whether it be educational or culinary related). It is a place of discovery. But most of all, it is the place my family and friend gather to have a good time.
For some reason, whether you have a large kitchen or a small kitchen, the kitchen always seems to be the place where people gather at parties, migrate to during events and end up in at the end of the day. My kitchen is very small, but the most used room in the house. I refer to it as an open galley kitchen. It is long and narrow, providing counter space on both sides. It’s functional and allows me to meet my family’s needs. Since I’m not a huge cook, the kitchen was not a main priority when I purchased my house. That being said I have a strong love hate relationship with it.
I love the openness of my kitchen. It has a pass through to the living room, allowing the person who is cooking or cleaning access to TV or party. With its light colours, it provides the feeling that it is a lot larger then it actually is. The light from the large glass sliding door and the windows from the living allow it feel bright and airy. Although it is narrow, I find it very convenient to work on counter and be steps away to an additional counter. The addition of a place to eat that is steps away from the main hub of the kitchen allows forgotten items at arms reach. It cute and functional.
It is small! When you have more then one person in the kitchen, traffic jams and accidents are bound to happen. A lot of communication and coordination is required when DH and I make a meal together. Besides lack of floor space, there is a lack of storage space too. With 20 cupboards and 4 drawers, you would think that I have ample storage space. Unfortunately, with a builder’s standard kitchen, there are awkward corner cupboards and unforgiving shelf heights that prevent maximum use of the space. My biggest pet peeve is the lack of design! There is no back splash and I’m forever scrubbing food that has flown out of the mixer or splashed out of the pan off the wall. It lacks design, appeal and organization.
When I learned that Finish was hosting the #FinishYourKitchen $10000 makeover, I began dreaming what I would do to improve my kitchen. Obviously, increasing square footage is not an option, unless I want to loose living space in the living room. So my kitchen redesign is going to have to be smart, functional and full of organizational tips and tricks. I would love to keep the open airy feel of my kitchen so I would probably go with a white (easy to clean!) solid wood cupboard with a decorative design. I would love one of the cupboards to have a glass front and be lit up from within. To organize my kitchen, I would love slide out drawers for pots, cupboards build with organizational shelves and hooks to give every item a special place, and a cutting board that slides out from under the counter. The counter I would like a white and smoky black granite that can withstand the abuse of children and knifes. I would love a triple sink that is sunk into the counter, so that one can easily wipe crumbs and mess straight into the sink without getting it stuck in the base of the sink. To finish my dream kitchen off, I would like a glass tile back splash in neutral colours and a few decorative items to add pizazz to the overall look. Here is a pinterest board that I have created with ideas that I would love to incorporate into my kitchen.
