My boys are extremely excited to go back to school. Although they enjoy the lazy days of summer, they also love learning and hanging out with their friends. I believe that friendship is a very important life lesson that children need to experience. With siblings, even though they fight, they know deep down that they will always be friends (i.e. If he sleeps in the bunk above you, you kinda have to!). At school, friendship doesn’t work that way. Friendships come and go, some stand the test of time, but it is learning process forged by interpersonal bonds and mutual affection.
Being an 80’s girl, I was obsessed with My Little Pony. Hundreds of them littered my room, the bathtub and accompanied me everywhere! The magical adventures, we embarked on were endless. When I heard that My Little Pony released a new full-length movie on friendship and compromise, I knew this was an experience I had to share with my boys.
Synopsis for My Little Pony: Equestria Girls:
The movie begins in Pony-land where Twilight Sparkle’s crown is stolen from the Crystal Empire Sunset Shimmer. To escape capture, Sunset Shimmer jumps through a magical mirror into an alternate world with Twilight Sparkle close on her tail. When they emerge from the mirror they find themselves in a alternate world where she is a teenage girl! With the help of 5 teenage girls (who closely resemble her friends at home) Twilight Sparkle must learn how to fit into this strange win the Princess of the Fall Formal crown in order to return home. Through friendship, forgiveness and determination, Twilight Sparkle learns the true meaning of friendship.
This movie arrived at the perfect time. I was hosting a rainy day play date at my house with a friend, her daughter and two sons. Dying to watch the movie, I put in the My Little Pony: Equestria Girls movie and was fascinated to see that children ages 5-8, both boys and girls, sit silently and watch the entire movie. The boys loved the theft of the crown and the magic mirror that turned the ponies from horses to humans. The girls loved idea of becoming the Princess of the Fall Formal and correctly naming each human with their pony name. They laughed, they cheered and more importantly they got the main message of the move. After the movie, I asked all of them what main message was. In their own words they said:
DS5: Be nice to each other
DS7: Its important to forgive
Boy5: Forgiveness is a must
Girl8: If you work together, you can achieve anything!
After the movie, we explored the bonus features. I loved that the DVD includes nail decals (for the girls), Karaoke Songs for a fun dance party, and an opportunity to Pony-fy yourself! The kids had a blast sing and dancing, it was the perfect end to a rainy day play date!
I love movies that inspire and teach children a loving message.
This one had it all!
