What is your favourite sound? My favourite sound is the first time I hear my baby laugh. A baby begins to smile around 2 months, but it isn’t until they are 4 or 5 months that the sweet, uncontrollable sound of laughter escapes their tiny mouths. Laughter is the involuntary reaction to certain event, situation or circumstance. Laughter can arise from such activities as being tickled, seeing a funny face or hearing a funny noise. Usually reserved for those people who first made them smile, a babies laughter is a bonding moment that allows you to see a glimpse of your baby’s personality and who they may become.
Laughter feels good, but how can it heal us?
Four ways Laughter is like medicine:
1. It improves our mental state – Have you ever had a bad day and nothing could get you out of your rut? I had one of those the other day, and my DS5 came up to me and asked if he could tell me a knock knock joke. I agreed (I wasn’t in the mood but agreed because I didn’t want to hurt his feelings) and was surprised how much his simple knock knock joke made me feel so much better.
2. Stimulate your immune system – Have you ever fallen on the floor laughing, with tears in your eyes and pains in your side? The physical reactions that are taking place in your body is amazing! You are increasing your blood pressure, decreasing stress hormones, and increasing your heart rate. A good bout of laughter allows you to achieve the similar positive results to that of a 20 minute workout!
3. Reduce pain – Pain is no laughing matter, but laughing can help you feel better. Laughing helps reduce fear and anxiety, placing in a better frame of mind to deal with the pain. Next time you stub your toe, think of your favourite sitcom and it may help distract you from the pain.
4. Decrease Stress – It has been found that laughter decrease levels of stress hormones like cortisol and epinephrine. Without high levels of these hormones, you are likely to feel emotional able to tackle the problem at hand.
Laughter is truly the best medicine but unfortunately, as a society, we don’t laugh enough! One study suggests that healthy children may laugh as much as 400 times per day, but adults tend to laugh only 15 times per day (About).
If laughter contains all of these health benefits why aren’t we encouraging more laughter?
