ONE HOT MAMA is not normally a phrase that new mom’s associate with themselves!
The minute I found out I was pregnant with my first son, I ran to the bookstore and purchased the book “What to expect when you are expecting”. I wanted to know everything that was happening. The book true to its word explained the changes that were going on with my body, the changes that were going on with the baby and what I could expect to happen in the months leading up to the big day. It met all my expectations were met until DS6 was born. Now I was a new mom, who heavily relied on her reading material to learn how to deal with each future step, no reading material to go on.
I struggled through. Learned from my mom, learned from my friends and other new moms I met, but I still felt like I was missing the crutch I so desperately needed and wanted.
Recently I was handed the book, “One Hot Mama; The Guide to Getting Your Mind and Body Back After Baby” written by Erin Cox to review. Although I was 1 year (and 3 children) postpartum, I still didn’t consider myself complete. My mind and my body had not returned to my ideal state. Thinking I could pick up a few tips, I happily agreed to review the book.
This book was written by Erin Cox after her experience as a new mom. This book is written as guide to help new mothers understand the physical mental and spiritual changes that they will undergo after the birth of the child. It is through understanding theses changes that a New mom can take steps in the right direction towards improving their mind, body and Soul. The book is divided into chapters focusing on different challenges that a new mother might face with a new baby (self identity, relationship, etc). The book explores the scientific reasons behind the moods and feelings, then approaches each challenge with way to deal with it. Through the use of creative tips and soul searching questionnaires, one can begin to understand how and why we feel this way. After healing the mental and spiritual aspect of the new mom, the chapter concludes with a sample exercise routine (complete with pictures demonstrating the movements) and how mom can implement them into their busy baby schedule. The book encourages and empowers women to get back into shape post pregnancy, while emerging into a positive new life as women and mother.
Erin Cox is a mother of 3, a life coach and an author. She writes books based on her life experiences with her children as way to empower women in the joys of motherhood. She is an Air Force Pilot’s wife and has moved 4 times in the last ten years. This has granted her the opportunity to meet and bond with many new mothers all over the world. Her mission is to teach Mom’s to reach a state of happiness and peace whereby allowing them to provide better for their families.
From the opening chapter to the final words, I was hooked on this book. It was written with sincerity, humour and truth lack in many health books on the market. As I read through the book, I felt like I was having a conversation with a good friend, who was able to share experiences and emotions that one would not usually discuss for fear of being seen as weird or crazy. This book was a quick and easy read. Although it provided tons of medical and scientific information backing all the emotional, physical and spiritual situations that a new mom can experience, it was presented in such a way that everyone from a university scholar to a GED graduate would understand and get something out of the book. I love that it was Mom focused and Mom driven. I like that Erin’s main mission was in order for the family unit to remain strong, functionable and happy, Mom had to take care of herself. This is an issue that is forgotten by many moms, both new and old. As a new mom, we tend to focus solely on this newly created human being, forgetting the hormonal and physical changes that Mom’s body has had to undergo.
My favourite part of the book is the progressive exercise routines that Erin creates. She begins slow and simple and progresses as your body and mind adapt to the new changes in your life. I love that she breaks it down into what you should be doing everyday, for how long and provides pictures to show you how to do. The removes any fear of unknown, confusion or guess work. The straight forward approach is reassuring and encouraging.
Overall, I would rate this book a 5 out of 5. I love how ‘real’ life it is. It applies to any new mom regardless of economical, social or geographical status. Although, it is written for new moms, I feel that this book is essential to all Mom’s who are at a stage in their life where they want to reclaim their mind, body and soul, but don’t know how or where to start.
