As Mommies, we have all had those days where our baby just refuses to eat. As we sit with squash in our hair, strained peas on our shirt, we wonder how we can make mealtime more fun. I can remember back to when I was a kid and my Mom and Dad would make choo choo noises to encourage me to eat. I have tried this technique several times with my children over the years to encourage my children to eat foods they’d rather leave behind. Both of my sons enjoyed my ‘make belief train’ out of a common dinner spoon. They would giggle and laugh and say things like “next time the train’s name is James or Percy or Harold!” DD1, on the other hand, didn’t fall for it. I don’t know if its a girl thing or what, but I named EVERY single train on Sodar Island and she still didn’t fall for the train-spoon game.
Then the heavens opened and I was presented with the opportunity from 2 Blue Ducks to try an Oogaa Mealtime set, I was excited! They created a product turned the age old game of a train spoon and made it a reality.
My first observation of the product was the beautiful vibrant colours. They are bold, bright and engaging! My daughter couldn’t wait for me to open the mealtime set. Of course, her brothers were eager to “help” feed her too!
The bowl is amazing! It is soft and pliable, made out of a sturdy silicone material. This material makes it virtually indestructible! It has been thrown on ceramic floors over a dozen time and I have never worried once if its going to crack or splinter. It can be heated in the microwave, washed in the dishwasher and frozen in the freeze. Each time you use it, it is a good as the first! If you have a husband like mine, who occasionally forgets to wash out the bowl after dinner, you don’t have to worry about scrubbing it the next morning. The bowl is so pliable, you are able to bend and the caked on foods just pops off and I have never had the bowl stain with spaghetti sauce!
The spoons were my daughters favourite part. She liked the way the soft, smooth silicone felt on her sore gums. I liked that there wasn’t the possibility of them to become rough like some of her other metal spoons. Like the bowl, the spoons didn’t stain or loose their shape or colour with repeated washings. She loved the train and plane characters on the spoons. The first time I made a choo-choo noise with the train spoon, she looked at me like “yes! you finally got it! This IS a train!” When she refuses to eat meat, I always reach for her train spoon and she would gladly eats the meat! It’s a miracle!
