To cook or not to cook
The kitchen and I have not always been friends. I had the basic culinary skills, but I was unmotivated to move beyond that. I thought of cooking as a chore rather than the ability to create edible meals. Luckily I married a man who was a cooking genius. All of the cooking duties fell on him and I was on clean up patrol. When I became a mother 6 years ago, that all changed. Staying at home with the children propelled me to take a more active role in the kitchen. I wanted to provide healthy nutritious meals for my children, so I knew I had to conquer my fear of the kitchen. I started out small, cooking simple easy meals. The more time I spent in the kitchen, the more I began to realize that it is the tools that make the chief. Things like slicing, dicing and chopping were changed from a chore into an art when you had the right knives.
My Introduction to CUTCO
The first time I was introduced to CUTCO was at my wedding shower. My grandmother gave me a cooler bag for my wedding present. I was confused when I saw it amidst the other beautiful wrapped presents and the decorative bags. When it was time to open my wedding presents, my grandmother excitedly handed me the cooler bag. It was cold! I unzipped the top section to find 4 frozen t-bone steaks. “Keep digging!” she examined with a smile on her face. Under the frozen steaks, I found a set of carving CUTCO knives. They were beautiful with their long dark handles and they look sharp in the packaging. At the time, I was excited to have a new set of knives to replace my mother inlaw’s hand-me-downs. Little did I know, Grammy had let me in on an amazing discovery. Weeks later, my new husband and I were cooking dinner when we decided it was time to bring out the CUTCO knives. It was love at first cut!
The Steak and Potatoes of it
My Grandmother’s wedding present was one of my favorite. She knew of my love for meat and it inspired her to get me the best knives on the market. When I was given an opportunity to test more of CUTCO products, I knew I wanted to test the steak knives. My first impression was amazement. The overall appearances of the knives were strong, rich and masculine looking. After holding the knives in my hand, the weight gave me the confidence in them to be able to tackle any piece of meat. The beautiful, brown handles were contoured to fit comfortably in my hand. I liked the way that the way that the handle did not consist of sharp edges, so it didn’t dig into my hand when I was cutting through a tough piece of meat.
I love that the handle is grooved in such a way that there are thumb and forefinger indents that helped increase my precision when cutting meat. The blade was beautifully crafted. Instead of the normal serrated edge like my old knives, these knives have a unique Double-D recessed Edge. This allows the knife to cut on 3 separate cutting surfaces instead of one. The feature allowed me to cut through meat rather than shred or tear it. Being a busy mom of three, I have little time to clean up and worry about the chemicals that make up the products I use. I was extremely excited to find out that the knife is both dishwasher safe and BPA free. This mom is reassured and thrilled with the results!
I decided that I would put these knives to the test! It was leftover night in our house, so I had the ability to try the knives out on both ham and steak.
Ham – Ham is usually a fairly easy meat to cut. When using the CUTCO knife, it was effortless. The knife cleanly cut through the ham, the way a butter knife cuts through butter. The ham was sliced beautifully with clean cut lines.
Steak – Steak, on the other hand, can be marbled with intramuscular fat making it more difficult to cut through. My old steak knives made eating steak a chore. The knife often got caught on the fat and it required stroke after stroke to cut through. CUTCO knives made steak eating a thrill. They glided easily through steak and conquered the fat like a champ.
CUTCO has been around since 1949 and stand behind all their knives. I am in love with my carving knives and now my steak knives. If you are in the market for a new set of knives, I highly recommend you test out CUTCO.
