Tips to keep you happy and healthy ‘down there’ this summer
Summer has finally made its appearance! Hot, humid weather, days chasing the kids around the splash pad, and warm nights in the hot tub. As wonderful as the heat is, it isn’t necessarily good for a woman’s body. Girls SWEAT. That’s right, we don’t glow, sparkle or any other pretty word, we SWEAT. Hard core, dripping wet, sweat from top to bottom. Sadly, its when we sweat ‘down there’ that the problems begin. For many women, the warmer temperature brings an increased risk of an “itch” that nobody likes to talk about – yeast infections.
In today’s society, things like a YEAST infections are a taboo subject. I think my favourite commercial ever was the one where a woman came on the TV, played a football games in the corner and said “guys watch football, while us girls talk about uncomfortable subject. A yeast infection is an uncomfortable problem but it shouldn’t be an uncomfortable topic!
YEAST INFECTIONS AND SUMMER!
A yeast infection is an inflammation of the vagina caused by an increase in the fungus, Candida albicans. Surprisingly, yeast infections are more common than you think! Approximately 75% of women will experience vaginal yeast infection once in their life and five per cent of those women will experience reoccurring yeast infections (3 to 4 infections per year). Thanks to the warm, humid weather, moisture gets trapped and yeast can overgrow, causing itching, burning and discomfort. If you’ve had one, you know exactly what I’m talking about.
The good news is that with a few simple tips, you can avoid that pesky itch.
1.. Stay Dry! Hot tubs, swimming pools and lakes are the perfect way to cool off on a hot summer day, but remember it isn’t a good idea to stay in your wet bathing suit for too long. Yeast grows best in a moist environment, making wet bathing suits a breeding ground for unwanted infections. When you are done cooling off, dry yourself good and remove any wet clothing as fast as possible!
2.. Know your body! Your vagina is a very complex environment. Naturally acidic, your vagina contains a rich quantities of beneficial bacteria to help fend off infections and maintain a normal pH level (between 3.8 to 4.5 ). When this environment is altered, problems arise. Odour, itchiness and yeast infections are just a few of the problems that stem from an unbalanced pH. RepHresh™ Gel is a gynecologist recommended product and clinically proven to be pH balanced which can help to eliminate feminine odour and relieve feminine discomfort.
3.. Cotton is the natural choice! In order for your vagina to regulate its pH levels, it needs to breath. Confining, non breathable clothing such as tight jeans, bathing suits, etc. allow for moisture to become trapped. Cotton and silk underwear are the sensible choice as they absorb moisture, keeping you dry thus prevent the growth of yeast.
4.. Take healthy measures: RepHresh™ Pro-B reduces the number of urogenital pathogenic bacteria and yeast on vaginal surfaces. It’s clinically tested and works by balancing the yeast and bacteria that are naturally present in a woman’s body to help restore and maintain proper vaginal flora. Try adding one capsule to your daily routine to keep your body on track and ensure nothing slows you down this summer!
5.. Maintain a healthy diet: You are what you eat! Or at least, what you eat will help determine the alkaline level of your body. If you suspect you are suffering from a yeast infection, foods like cranberry juice and yogurt prevent yeast infections and aid in their treatment! Remember, both a balanced, nutritious diet and plenty of water are the key to optimal vaginal and reproductive health.
