High School. They say it is the best years of life. They say its a place where you find yourself, where you learn how to navigate the world, and your first real taste of adulthood. No longer are you cocooned by the comfort of the same friendly faces that you saw day after day in elementary school, coddled by the teachers that have watched you grow from that timid JK to cool grade 8, surrounded by the familiar layout of a school you could navigate through in the dark. Now you are a small fish in a big sea. You are one face, one person in a class of many. High School is BIGGER and HARDER.
High School is hard. Academically it brings on a larger workload, increased pressures to succeed, and a focus on the future. Socially, things like drugs, sex (and rock n roll!) and friendships become socially blurred lines. Some people excel. They grab on to an amazing group of friends, a supportive team or club and find a place where they grow, mature and succeed. Others struggle with making friends, forming connections and feeling like the fit.
Netflix explores this teenage anguish and struggle through its new new original series ”13 Reasons Why”. Based on the best-selling novel of the same name, this series follows the aftermath of one high school girl’s pain and suffering that lead to her ultimate suicide. Before she killed herself, Hannah Baker created 13 cassette tapes calling out the names of 13 (or is it 12?) people whom she blames for her suicide. Theses tapes unleash secrets, scandals and serve as a chain letter, passed from blamed classmate to classmate accusing them for their part in her suicide. Then it lands in the lap of nice guy Clay Jensen. Clay worked with Hannah, respected Hannah and crushed on Hannah, yet he too played a role in these tapes. Clay listens to the secrets and tries to understand the despair that happened right in front of his eyes. Wondering which of the ’13 Reasons Why’ he is a part of?
This series is addictive. From the moment, we meet the main characters we can see a piece of our ‘high school’ self in them. From the rich jocks to the stressed-out overachievers, the cool kids to the nerds, and those in search for their sexual orientation, each person presents has a different struggle and a different challenge that they must overcome in order to survive high school. Each side of the tape (aka episode) brings on harsh topics such as stalking, drunken driving, sexual assault and, of course, teenage suicide that is balanced out with the hopeful, love story of what could have been. Some stories are more powerful than other, but you will always be left with more questions then answer. You won’t be able to stop as this gut wrenching story of one girls high school experience and her ultimate revenge unravels in front of your eyes.
