Have you ever visited your school’s “Lost and Found”? Unfortunately, it is a spot I frequent with three children! Baseball caps in the spring and fall or hats and mitts in the winter, it is almost guaranteed that one of my three kids will get off the bus missing an item of clothing they left with that morning. When asked about their whereabouts, I am always given the same response, “I dunno!” and the hunt for the missing item begins. Last year, we ‘donated’ half a dozen hats, two dozen single mitts and a sweater or two! Our school’s lost and found begins the school year with one small table and as the year progress it gets large enough to outfit an army! It wasn’t until my son’s 5 year old bus buddy experienced the great snow pant mix up that I realized the importance of labeling your children’s property. Every day our bus buddy’s mom would send her child to school dressed from top to bottom in his snow suit and every day he would come home with his snow suit on. One day, he decided the bus was too hot to wear his snow pants on, so he carried them instead. The problem was another kid on the bus decided to do the same thing and had similar black snow pants. When my son’s bus buddy got off the bus and the bus drove away his mom noticed the pants looked different. Instead of getting off with size 5 snow pants, he got off with size 12! Since neither of the snow pants were labelled, it took a long time to find and exchange the mixed up snow pants. This incident taught me the importance of labeling my kids’ stuff.
In the past I have tried many different labeling tools for attaching my children’s name to their belongings.
- Sharpies – work great on clothing but its permanent! You are limited to the name your write, which isn’t beneficial if you want to pass it on to siblings or sell them.
- Premade labels – Colorful and all the rave, but again you are either limited to the one name or you end up with a million labels that you will never use before the iconic characters become obsolete.
- Sew on label – Versatile, but time consuming. This mama needs quick and efficiency.
- Tape label makers – They work ok but they use a lot of tape and the ink runs out very fast.
This year when I was shopping at Staples for back to school supplies, I came across the ultimate label writer!
