A few months before school ended for summer vacation, my DS7 came home from school looking very upset. When I questioned him about it he told me about an incident that had occurred during recess at his school. He was playing with a bunch of his friends when he saw a little girl, S, crying. She was classmate and he was very closer to her. When he asked her what was wrong, she said that a girl in the class told all the other girls in the class to NOT be her friend. This girl threatened the rest of the girls in the class that if they were friends with S, she wouldn’t be friends with them. DS7 didn’t understand. Why couldn’t everyone just be friends?
I was stumped. I couldn’t answer his question right away. Why couldn’t everyone just get along? Why couldn’t we all just be friends? What makes a good friend? I began to review my life and the friends that I have and have had in the past. Some friends came into my life for a brief time and slowly drifted apart as our lives changed and evolved. Others occur in the most unlikely situations, yet last forever. Friendship is complex, emotional and beautiful all at the same time. I took to the internet to see what others consider to be qualities in a good friend:
Don’t judge you, but trust you and lend an ear when you need it. -KL
Not always agreeing with you on everything, but loving you for your differences in opinion. – SG
Appreciates you for who you are, faults and all. Is always there for you (and vice versa) even if life or distance means you haven’t spoken in days/weeks/months/years. – DC
International Day of Friendship
International Day of Friendship kicks off globally on July 30th , so this is a great time to talk to your children about the importance of being a good friend. As you know, the MY LITTLE PONY brand has taught fans of all ages (from my generation to my children’s!) about the power of friendship. To celebrate International Day of Friendship, my family visited http://mylittlepony.hasbro.com/friendshipday for project ideas and resources on how we could learn to become good friends and make a difference in their own community.
