What is it about Twins that makes them so fascinating? When I was 13 years old, I had my first real experience with twins. I was in charge of 6 month old twins for an entire summer. I would wake them up in the morning, watch them play and explore the world during the day and then put them to bed at night. I was enthralled by what I saw! They were identical 6 month old twins, but were different in every way beside looks. One was kind, compassionate and giving, the other was dominating, aggressive and a taker. Although they were extremely different, the bond between them was unbreakable. They seemed to understand one another needs with words, they developed their own way of communicating and they knew they would never be alone.
Ironically, I ended up marrying a twin.
Do you know who else had a twin? Elvis Presley was a twin. Sadly, Elvis’ twin was stillborn. This loss was felt my the king and he always wondered what his life would have been like had his brother survived. The “Identical” by screenwriter, Howard Klausner is a story loosely based on Elvis’, his twin brother (who supposedly dies at birth) and the beginning of rock and roll.
THE IDENTICAL tells the compelling story of twin brothers unknowingly separated at birth during the Great Depression. DREXEL HEMSLEY becomes an iconic 50’s rock ‘n’ roll star, while RYAN WADE (Blake Rayne) struggles to balance his love for music and pleasing his father. The Reverend Wade (Ray Liotta) and his wife (Ashley Judd) are sure their adopted son has been gifted and called by God to be a preacher. But Ryan challenges his parent’s vision for his life, and unflinchingly chooses to launch his own music career with his best friend (Seth Green). Encouraged by his wife (Erin Cottrell) and employer (Joe Pantoliano), Ryan embarks on an unpredictable, provocative path – performing the legendary music of Drexel Hemsley in sold out venues all across the country. As the brothers destinies tragically collide, Ryan discovers that Drexel is his identical twin which leads him to question everything he’s ever believed about God, family and his own identity.
Our Opinion: The identical was a heart warming, entertaining movie that satisfied my fascination with twins. I loved the compatibility between actors Ray Liotta, Ashley Judd and Seth Green as they told this story. Although the music was only satisfactory, the story was told in such away that it could easily be shared with the rest of the family. I loved the constant struggle between trying to find your way in life and the relationships you are faced with. It is a story that everyone can relate to. If you are an Elvis fan or looking for a family friendly movie, I highly recommend checking this out!
