Each month has a theme to bring about awareness of a certain social aspect, illness or occupation. February is black history month, October is Occupational Therapist month and November or should I say, MOVEMBER, is prostate cancer awareness month. Usually November passes as the “Christmas preparation” month, but this year our family is paying closer attention. This year my husband, like many other men across the world, is participating in MOVEMBER.
What is Movember?
Movember, formally known as November, is a moustache growing charity event set up to raise money and bring about awareness for men’s health especially prostate cancer. Movemeber is a global phenomenon that began in Melbourne, Australia and since has spread to the US, Canada, UK, Finland, the Netherlands, Spain, South Africa and Ireland. It was started in 2003 with 30 registered participants and as of 2010 there are now over 400, 000 registered participants supporting this cause.
The rules are very simple. On November 1st, the participant shaves their face baby smooth. They register at www.ca.movember.com and continue to grow, groom and fashion their best moustache over the course of the month. These men are now formally known as MO BROS. Mo Bros become walking billboards which aids in the initiation, discussion and the awareness of men’s health issues which are normally ignored. Over the course of the 30 days, Mo Bros collect sponsorships and donations for their mo-growing efforts which aids in the research and program development by the Prostate Cancer Canada organization.
Big steps have been taken towards changing attitudes and habits relating to men’s health around the world but there is still much to be done to catch up with the women’s health movement. Via the moustache, Movember aims to fulfill its vision of having an everlasting impact on the face of men’s health by continuing to spark conversation and spread awareness of men’s health each year.
So the next time you are at the mall or local grocery store and see a male sporting “the Trucker” or “the Rock Star” congratulate them on their efforts and donate to a great cause!
I’m super proud of my husband! To see his results or donate to the cause, please follow him at: http://ca.movember.com/mospace/2093112/
On each Wordless Wednesday blog this month, I’ll place an update picture so you can follow his success on my blog!
